Wrist & Elbow Pain

Wrist and elbow pain

Your arm has a lot of work to do. Much of the work we do today requires precise movements to grip and use tools. Your shoulder should be relaxed and if you hang your arm down by your side with your palm facing forward you should be able to rotate your arm almost 360 degrees. You can do this with movement in your shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. If your shoulder is helping hold up your neck, some of that movement is lost. Rotation of the arm is then left up to the forearm. If your forearm is the only means of rotation, you are making muscles work harder than they need to. Friction can start as muscles and tendons rub against each other. This may start to irritate your soft tissue which could lead to epicondylitis – a sore elbow or carpal tunnel where bundles of nerves are being irritated in a band in the front of your wrist.

Treatment for elbow and wrist pain

Treatment for elbow or wrist pain would involve relaxing your shoulder, gently holding your arm wherever it is stiff or painful. I would wait until you start to relax into the pressure and then gently traction so that your shoulder and neck are also being reached. If your shoulder, arm, wrist or hand wants to move, I move with it and let it unwind its tension. Everyone is an individual, and will have different tensions, so every treatment will be different. There is no formula. I allow your body to guide me.
